4-star: ISIS recruiting in Afghanistan, Pakistan

The Islamic State terror group is recruiting in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said Thursday.

“We are seeing reports of some recruiting,” said Gen. John Campbell, commander of the Resolute Support mission, during an interview with Army Times. “There have been some night letter drops, there have been reports of people trying to recruit both in Afghanistan and Pakistan, quite frankly.” Continue reading

The US is carrying out air strikes against Islamic State (IS) militants, citing in part the need to protect Americans in Irbil, the capital of semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan.

The city has been a base for foreigners and international organisations throughout more than a decade of conflict in Iraq.

Ringed by mountains and checkpoints, Irbil was the safe alternative to Baghdad, its appeal most obvious when the violence elsewhere seemed most ominous.

Foreign visitors to the city enjoyed freedoms unthinkable in other parts of the country – passing from luxury hotel to smoky drinking den without the company of costly and heavily armed bodyguards. Continue reading

General conversation about weapons in syria – This is a catchall but is primarily focused on conventional weapons. It looks for terms like guns, weapons, grenade, explosives, anti-personnel, weapon sales, Russian weapons, Chinese weapons, etc.

Weapons smuggling – Weapons are moving in and around Syria at an alarming rate and this problem will only grow as the opposition to Assad’s regime drags on.
